Free League’s Dragonbane TTRPG has been quickly adding supplements to take advantage of its burgeoning popularity. For those who don’t know, Dragonbane is a classless d20 fantasy role playing game based on an 80’s Swedish game. Combat is fast, the flow of the game encourages role playing, and it manages to play like an OSR game with enough modern touches to keep current gamers happy (if you want to read about some of my sessions I ran as GM to get an idea of what the game is about, check out my Secrets of the Draaken Emperor campaign summaries). I supported the Dragonbane Arkand and Book of Magic Kickstarter a while back, and received my books about a month ago.

Arkand: City of Waves and Flames is a 174-page hardcover city supplement. It features 20 adventure sites with full color maps (think adventures with non-linear structures – your players move through them however they wish); loads of NPC and monster stat blocks; heaps of lore, rumors, adventure seeds and encounter tables; glorious full color art; a large fold out map of the city. As you would expect from Free League’s books, the production value and writing is excellent. The adventure sites can be used as one-offs, or linked together to play a full campaign (three suggested city-based mini-campaigns, along with an underworld quest mini-campaign, are included in the book).
Please note that while you can use Arkand with the Dragonbane basic rules, it includes references to material from the Dragonbane Bestiary and recently released Book of Magic, so you may benefit from owning those books when you run it for your players through. Arkand: City of Waves and Flames is great value for any Dragonbane GM.
