I tried to make you happy
And not to bring you down
But again I failed so inevitably
Thorny crown upon my brow
I tried to make you happy
But perhaps the stage was set
For another lonely scene of remonstrance
A monologue of regret
I tried to make you happy
But it seems to be my fate
To swim against a surly tide
And to drown in history’s wake
