Upstart Photographer – Knighted Tree

Poetry and photography, live together in perfect harmony (to paraphrase Paul McCartney).

Cheers

Steve 🙂

Knighted Tree

Armoured and encrusted
Barnacled and salted
Prepared to joust
For your ocean’s honour
Your everlasting foe
The ever-shifting shore

Upstart Photographer – Rosella

I like to think I’m a bit of a photographer (that’s just the upstart in me). I also like to think I’m a bit of a poet (also the upstart). Let’s put them both together, shall we?

Cheers

Steve 🙂

Rosella. A poem.

At rest, before play,
Amongst a forest of chair trees
And table islands where
The highlights play upon
Your brilliant rainbow sheen.
Timidity gone, consumed
By time and overtures,
A domesticated flood
Of wary travellers
And after dinner mints.
“I’ll just rest here awhile,”
You think, before the
Busy tread of holidaying feet;
The rush hour cacophony
Of the morning tourist trade
And breakfast at the bar
.

Upstart Photographer – Nightwalk

Photos and poems. I never tire of them.

Cheers

Steve 🙂

Nightwalk. A poem.

Stone beneath toes,
wrinkled, yet timeless.
Glistening darkness,
an envelope for thoughts
sublime or unkind.
Theseus’ lifeline
into the distance:
a path to follow
until the real maze begins.

Upstart Photographer – Rock

I take photos. I write poems. Chalk and cheese. Not.

Cheers

Steve 🙂

Rock. A poem.

Rock of ages,
how do you stand
so firm and undeniable,
when every dog
has its day with you?

Upstart Photographer – Tallship

I take photos. I write poems. ‘Nuff said.

Cheers

Steve 🙂

Tallship. A poem.

You have bound me
as no ocean ever could—
wrapped in chains
and woven hemp,
fit to shackle Hercules.

Here I wait, as the wind
cajoles me with memories
of high seas and yesteryear;
my sails furled in impotence,
the waters lapping my bow
like a teasing mistress.

Upstart Photographer – Frogs

I take photos. I write poems. Together, they entwine.

Cheers

Steve 🙂

Two Frogs. A poem.

A weary twosome,
conjoined by habit
and reckless endangerment.

Jumping jacks
and errant tongues,
arguing like stormy weather.

Home is where the heart is,
and here, two misanthropes
dream in contentment.

Upstart Photographer – Row Boat

I take photos. I write poems. Here, I have a chance to marry them in wedded bliss.

Cheers

Steve 🙂

Upstart Photographer - Row Boats - stevestillstanding.com

Row Boat. A poem.

Sun baking,
back to the bright skies.
Perhaps a tan will disguise
the smile lines and withered cracks
of your tempered existence.

Still, you long
for the lake’s gentle caress
upon your creaking bones,
the wafting of water
and the carefree momentum
of each oar’s insistence.

Upstart Photographer – The Abandoned House

Photo, Poem—two of a kind in the best of minds. Or the worst. You tell me.

Cheers

Steve 🙂

The House. A poem (Abandoned, part 2)

This shell lingers like the aftertaste
of a charcoal-flavoured entree,
partially consumed like an afterthought
of vagrant afternoons
and post-sunset tribulations.

The book resting on your pane,
to be discovered like a subtle artefact,
woven with memory and gentle discord,
its pages read by the illiterate mountain breeze.
A page turner, nonetheless.

Throughout the halls the remnants lay,
waiting upon the rust and decay
that would make them less than useful.
Much like the old couple
who lived here before the passing storm,
when the rafters choked on smoke
and carbon monoxide was the drug of choice
(even if choice was a forced confession).

Here and there Mother Nature speaks,
disdainfully mocking the carpenter’s achievements
and bricklayer’s sandstone mastery.
She paints a vivid green commentary,
owing nothing to architectural remonstrance,
but building a memorial

that will linger like the aftertaste
of a charcoal-flavoured entree.

Upstart Photographer – The Book

I recently found a house in the mountains, burnt out and abandoned. Resting on a window pane, its tenuous pages teased by the wind, was a partially charred book. The page settled in the breeze. As I took a photo I noticed how tragically ironic the words were.

I had to write a poem about it, of course.

Cheers

Steve 🙂

The Book. A poem (Abandoned, part 1)

Resting now, tales upended,
curled from flames at war,
your words not quite as meaningless
as others may have thought.
Each blackened leaf an anecdote
of irony, for naught.
Naked walls surround you;
a Dali canvas, all distraught.

You remain the lost reminder
of all the lonely souls before,
who paced this frame and residence
before the firestorm burned it raw.

Upstart Photographer: Wreck

Photo, Poem – mix and match. Hopefully match.

Cheers

Steve 🙂

Car wreck

Wreck. A poem.
Like some Greek tragedy
played out upon a silver screen,
the bullies and the demons
had their way with you, you see.
Left you naked and abused,
charred and anaesthetised,
just a step away from paradise
and a world away from prying eyes.
Another roadside nightmare
come to life; without life
your struggle epitomised
in every passing headlight.

Upstart Photographer: Flowers

Photo. Poem. Yep, it’s happening.

Cheers

Steve 🙂

Flowers. A poem.

Delicate, handled by one
as ham-fisted and indelicate as I
Effulgent petals and tapered stems
A majesty denied but gained again
The vase a minor price to pay
For a life ensconced in beauty
(As short-lived as it may be)

Upstart Photographer: Beach Cave

Photo. Poem. They sort of go hand-in-hand.

Cheers

Steve 🙂

Beach Cave. A poem.

Your wailing darkness,
meets with the implacable tide
in a passionate nightly affair;

a restless sculptor of eons,
she licks your ebon sides
and strokes your clay;

makes you fit for audiences
with kings and queens
of the brightest day,

whose presumptive impressions
ironically last no longer than
the briefest of sparks.

Upstart Photographer: Things#5

Another photo. Another poem.

Cheers

Steve 🙂

Lighthouse. A poem.

A hollow betrayal;
you were pushed aside
and swept under the rug
of failing and fatalistic light
(what irony, it seems).

A ship’s memory is short;
they no longer need your eyes.
The ocean, whose detriment
you did long prevent,
has had its revenge after all.

Upstart Photographer: Things #4

A photo. An accompanying poem. ‘Nuff said.

Cheers

Steve 🙂

Wall. A poem.

You blocked the way,
a cantankerous old crone,
bleached, cracked and worn,
bitter-boned and sun-dried.

What use are you when
your gaps in memory
provide brief passage,
your purpose undermined
and inconsequential.

Upstart Photographer: Things #2

I like to write poems. I like to take photographs. Sometimes I take photos of things.

Here’s one, with an accompanying poem. I don’t normally write poems about things, but for my photos I can make an exception.

Cheers

Steve 🙂

Road. A poem.

Exemplars on the way,
milestones of the incredulous
and the extravagant,
until the unseen border, gone.
Here in stark contrast,
mother’s permanent residents
hold sway and sway in time
to the rhythms of the asphalt,
the heat swathes writing
memoirs of the silence.

I write a lot of poems, some from my head, some from my heart. Many don’t appear on this website. For more of my poetry, check out The All or the Nothing, my first e-book, available at most online book sellers.

Bowl. A poem.
Crusted and crinkled,
your contours and skin
are wrinkles in time,
shaped and subsumed
in ornamental bliss:
a life beyond death.

Upstart Photographer #2. And complementary poems, to boot.

Some more photos from my ongoing amateur photographic journey. These ones are many months old. About time they saw the light in some unfiltered, unaffected glory. Or some semblance of glory, anyway.

I’ve written some short poems to accompany them. I don’t know why; probably to make this post seem less boring.

church (cropped) - stevestillstanding
Church. A poem.
Towering, cascading walls and spires.
Dreams of saints and gorgons
all in one.

fort (cropped) - stevestillstanding
Fort. A poem.
You stand alone, forlorn,
neglected by time and tide.

Once you surveyed
the ocean with needy eyes,
lost in paranoid bliss.

Today, you mourn your loss
amongst rust, cracks and loneliness.

view (cropped) - stevestillstanding
View. A poem.
The view from here, looking up and down:
shades of today and yesterday,
visions of sun dresses and flowered hair,
offset by cell phone and emoji conversation.

The wind brings glad tidings
and I whisper thanks in return.

window (cropped) - stevestillstanding
Windows. A poem.
Just outside, a better world?
Perhaps the glass has
skewed your vision
enough to imagine roses.

Until next time,

Cheers

Steve 😊
