Okay, okay. I admit it. I sold out. I downloaded Tinder.
If you have read my previous online dating posts (here, here, here, here and here), you’ll know that I was vehemently opposed to Tinder because of the considerably biased rep the poor app, and its users, have (note how I am now sounding more sympathetic). I didn’t want to be seen as someone just looking to ‘hook up’, and being a Christian, it was doubly inappropriate.
Well, I have now tried the Tinder experience and I can say that my opinion is pleasantly changed (read: eat humble pie). I have been on a few online dating websites and they have been somewhat…disappointing. Women with photos that look nothing like them, crazy stalkers and scammers haunt my waking hours (okay, that’s a bit overly dramatic, but I’m a writer. Cut me some slack).
Within hours of being on Tinder (swipe left, swipe right – I feel like I’m in The Karate Kid and Mr Miyagi is abstractly teaching me some new defensive move), I had a few (admittedly vague) conversations.
Within a few days I had a date (yes, remarkable, given my jaded dating history). It was nice: a few drinks, dinner and a fun night. No, she wasn’t Christian, but we had a good time anyway. I have now had a few more decent conversations with other women and will try a few more dates. No, I’m not playing the field. I’m very upfront with my date that if we don’t think we are viable long-term prospects then we move on. Okay, maybe I do sound a little shallow (what does the guilty-looking emoji look like…).
Turns out Tinder is not so bad, after all.
Cheers
Steve 😊
Good luck to you. I met my husband on line. I set clear criteria for myself to weed out the duds, and met a few no-go’s, but it turned out great. Patience and time required, lol.

Tell me about it lol! I like to think patience is my middle name, but it’s not. ‘Indecisive’ is my real middle name. 😉
It’s interesting just how many people meet their long term/life partners online. I think online dating gets a bad rap (sometimes deservedly) but there are enough positives to overcome the negatives. Wow, I’m a barrel of cliches today lol. Take care 🙂

Indecisive, I can’t help you with – I’m a go for it, and if it doesn’t work, move on type, lol

I’m getting more decisive every day 🙂

In the States, Tinder is a hooking-up/one-night-stand app. Must be quite different there. 🙂

I read a few articles about Tinder before trying it. Seems a good percentage use it that way, but many use it as a traditional dating app. It’s just a matter of sorting the good from the chaff 🙂

I won’t use Tinder because I don’t want my real name in dating cyberspace and being from a small-ish city in Australia, it’s just too close to home to use my actual name vs an alias. I also find Tinder’s rep as a hook-up site offputting, but if it wasn’t for the above, I would probably give it a go. What part of the world are you from Steve?

Newcastle, Australia, a slightly larger than average town (actually it’s classified as a city, but really only just).
What I’ve found with Tinder is you get out of it what you put in. Some men choose to put in their genitals. I prefer to use my quick wit and charm (not that I have much of that).
I’m not there to ‘pick up’. It does, however, give me an option to go out occasionally rather than sit home and mope (my usual date night). I’m pretty sure I’m not going to meet the woman of my dreams there, but if you’ve read any of my poetry you’ll know she’s already passed me by.
Doh.
Steve 🙂

I tried online dating. After two days I closed my account. I read that there are some very unsavoury characters on Tinder.

There are, as well as scammers. You just have to sort the wheat from the chaff 🙂

My friend met her husband via Tinder so it does work out for some people. I guess you just have to keep on trying and maintain an open mind.
Good luck Steve!

I’m glad to hear you had a good experience with Tinder. I’ve been using it longer than I like to admit and have run into too many people who were definitely in it for the “wrong” reasons in my opinion but it’s Tinder so what do we expect! Lol.
Maybe you’ll find the woman of your dreams on Tinder. You never know! 🙂

I don’t know about the right woman, but I’ve certainly come across a few of the wrong ones lol. At the moment things are a bit quiet in Tinder-land. I don’t think I truly believe I’m going to meet my one true love on Tinder, but you never know 🙂

That’s fantastic, congratulations! Tinder has been up and down – a bit weird. For me, anyway. I’ll have to write a follow up post about my experiences, soon. 🙂

haha this is awesome! I just did a very similar thing, after bashing Tinder ruthlessly I caved and downloaded it. It’s actually not that bad. I guess this is a good lesson about not judging things before giving them a fair shot!

Thanks! Yeah, we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Or its seedy reputation lol 😉

My opinion of Tinder has also changed, and I like how easy it is to use and that guys (or girls for that matter) can’t randomly contact you unless you both match. With the exception of one guy, the majority of people I spoke to were looking for relationships rather than hookups. That said, the one guy that I took “offline”, turned out to be a fake. I can usually spot them a mile off .. but they are getting soooo sophisticated. Despite my best efforts to verify who I was chatting to – I got suckered! Some good came from it though, as I now have a new website, Twitter, blog and social media pages dedicated to fighting back against online fakery 🙂

Yeah, scammers are a pain. It happened to me twice(!), but I managed to nip them in the bud pretty early. The garden is full of roses, but watch out for the pricks 😉
